The Dutch / American Boex Family

As far as civil and church records are able to trace, the American and Dutch Boex family lineage traces back almost 500 years to Joost Boex, a farmer who lived in Flanders (Belgium) in the late 1500s. Until about 1800, several generations of the Boex family lived in the villages of Poppel and Weelde (south of Eindhoven in the Netherlands). In 1791, Hermanus Antonius Boex (1770-1845) moved to Eindhoven, and found success as organist of the Roman-Catholic Church, married the daughter of a prominent family in the area, and later became the Director of the city's prestigious French School.

In turn, Hermanus's eldest son Franciscus Boex (1804-1883) started a prominent wine business in Eindhoven and later became the chairman of the city's Chamber of Commerce.

Most Americans with the surname "Boex" -including myself- are descendants (or married descendants) of Antonius Wilhelmus Boex, the eldest son of Franciscus Boex.

Antonius Wilhelmus Boex (1833-1904) moved to the United States from the Netherlands in 1872. Antone and his family first moved to Cincinatto, Ohio, where his first wife (Catherine Hoefnagels) died. Antone remarried to Margaret O'Hanlon and moved, first to St. Louis, Missouri, and finally to DePere, Wisconsin (near Green Bay). Due to the fact that Antone had sixteen children, Boexes now live across the entire United States, from Wisconsin to Florida and from New York to California. A family picture from around 1900 shows Antone's with his children and many of his grandchildren.
