Personal Profile

My name is Jamie Boex (pronounced BO-ex). I was born in Washington, D.C., in July 1971. I am an American.

Although I spent the better part of my childhood overseas, I permanently returned to the U.S. in 1991. While metro Atlanta was my home for many years, I moved to Rockville, Maryland, in the summer of 2007. I am the loving father of two great children.

As an economist, my goal in life is to maximize U(X,L) where X= wH/P, subject to L+H ≤ T. (Of course, P and w are assumed exogenous but are subject to significant information asymmetries and other market imperfections.) I began my academic training in economics at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam (the Netherlands), where I stayed just long enough to complete my freshman year (propedeuse) in economics. After returning to the United States in 1991, I spent two very formative years completing my BA in economics at Kent State University in Ohio. Afterwards, I spent a summer as an intern with the Economic Office at the American Embassy in Paramaribo, Suriname.

I ended up at Georgia State University in Atlanta for my doctoral studies in economics, with concentrations in public finance and urban economics. I completed my doctoral program in December 1999 and accepted a position as Assistant Research Professor at GSU in August 2001. My professional interests generally involve public sector finances in developing economies, including fiscal decentralization reform, public expenditure management, poverty reduction strategies, and the political economy of intergovernmental finance.

Despite my academic roots, I left academia in 2007 (for now, at least) to focus more on real-world international development issues.
